Making Homemade Toothpaste

Making homemade toothpaste is extremely easy! You just need a few simple items and you’ll never have to buy toothpaste again. The baking soda scrubs your teeth and removes odors, the coconut oil moisturizes and kills germs, and the peppermint essential oil freshens breath.

TIPS:

  1. This toothpaste will not foam up like store-bought toothpaste, but this does not mean that it is not working to clean your teeth.
  2. Make a double batch of this so you don’t have to make it often.
  3. This toothpaste will taste salty at first, but just know that you will get used to it.
  4. A small amount of activated charcoal (NOT GRILLING CHARCOAL!) can be added to this toothpaste to increase its whitening power.

Supplies:

  • Baking Soda
  • Virgin Coconut Oil
  • (optional) Sea Salt
  • Peppermint essential oil (tea tree, oregano, clove, and eucalyptus oils can also be added)
  • (Optional) water
  • glass Jar/container with a lid

Instructions:

  1. This toothpaste can be made in the same container it will be store in or in a separate bowl. Fill your container about half-way with baking soda.
  2. Fill the other half of the container with coconut oil. This mixture should be about half baking soda and half coconut oil.
  3. To this mixture, add a generous pinch of sea salt. You do not have to do this if you do not have it.
  4. Then, add in your essential oils. Peppermint is the best to use but don’t be afraid to add in a few drops of a different essential oil. You will need as many drops as it takes for you to be able to taste it. This is not exact but you will get the hang of it over time. Add in about 10 drops of essential oil to begin with and then mix thoroughly.
  5. If the mixture is too difficult to mix, add in a few drops of water. This will help it mix better.
  6. Once the mixture is smooth, taste a tiny amount of the mixture. Do NOT swallow it! Just taste it on your tongue to see if it has enough essential oil. If not, add a few more drops. Continue this process until you achieve the desired flavor.
  7. Mix thoroughly and store in your container. Use as regular toothpaste.
